Why does AI give a different answer every time I ask?

Short answer
AI assistants add a little randomness on purpose, so their writing sounds natural instead of robotic. That's why ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini can answer the same question differently each time. A setting called "temperature" controls how much randomness there is. Low means consistent. High means creative but less predictable.
Without any randomness, AI writing gets dull and repetitive. It can loop on the same sentence patterns. With too much, it drifts off topic. Most chat apps pick a middle setting for you. Interestingly, nobody can fully explain why the usual middle setting works so well. It's practitioner know-how that holds up in practice.
For business tasks, the right amount depends on the job:
- Consistent (low): pulling numbers from invoices, sorting emails, filling forms. You want the same answer every time.
- Balanced (middle): customer replies, summaries, internal drafts.
- Creative (high): brainstorming names or campaign ideas, where variety is the point.
In a chat app you can't usually change it, but clear instructions and examples reduce the variation. In a workflow we build, we set it to match the task.
