What is responsible AI? A practical definition for small businesses

Short answer
Responsible AI means using AI in ways that are fair, safe, honest with people and actually helpful. For a small or mid-size business, it comes down to five habits: keep people in charge of decisions, start small, protect data, tell customers when they're dealing with AI, and measure whether it helps.
Most AI risk doesn't come from the technology alone. It comes from how it's used, by whom, on whom, and in which processes. That's good news for an owner. Most of the controls are in your hands, not the vendor's, whichever tool you choose.
One more idea worth keeping in mind: no powerful technology has ever been only good. The more a tool can do, the more it can help and the more it can harm. That's not a reason to avoid AI. It's the reason to be deliberate about it.
Our five principles are how we put this into practice on every project:
- Humans stay in charge. AI drafts, people approve.
- Start small. One workflow at a time.
- Protect data. Safeguards first, with BC PIPA and, where it applies, PIPEDA in mind.
- Be transparent. Customers know when it's AI.
- Measure honestly. If it doesn't help, we stop.
