How do AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini actually work?

Short answer
AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot write by guessing the next word, over and over, based on patterns from a huge amount of text. They are very good at producing writing that sounds right. They don't check whether it is right unless they are connected to a search or your own files.
You type a request. The tool works out which word is most likely to come next, adds it, then does it again. A whole email is built one word at a time. The technical name for the engine underneath is a large language model, or LLM.
The major assistants come from different companies: ChatGPT from OpenAI, Claude from Anthropic, Gemini from Google, Copilot from Microsoft, and Grok from xAI. Perplexity is an AI search tool that runs on several of these models and adds web results. They differ in style and strengths, but they share the same basic design. So they share the same weak spots.
What that means for you:
- Good at: drafting emails, summarizing long documents, rewording, sorting messages.
- Risky for: prices, legal rules, dates, anything that must be exactly right.
That's why every workflow we set up starts with a person on your team checking each output.
Frequently asked questions
Which assistant is best for business?
It depends on the task. Test two or three on your own real work before you pick one.
Does it understand what it writes?
Not the way a person does. It can't tell true from plausible on its own.
